Bush Creek Buddha - The Age Feature
A yoga weekend in a remote bush setting might suggest austerity, but Suzy and Philip, the
owners of Bush Creek Buddha, have created the opposite sensibility in their stylish country home, with its comfortable guest accommodation
and purpose-built yoga studio. Driving the last few kilometres on unsealed road gives visitors a wonderful sense of getting away from it all, yet it’s reassuring to know this won’t mean having to forgo life’s luxuries. Guests are warmly welcomed with the offer of a drink
(yes, alcohol is permitted) and some gourmet nibbles. In summer this might be served beside the 12.5-metre swimming pool.
Over the weekend, eight guests undertake three yoga classes of 1½ hours each, leaving plenty of time to relax. As a beginner to Iyengar yoga,
I was apprehensive about not holding my own, but Suzy, a yoga teacher since 1998, is skilled at working with different levels and has such a lovely manner that my more
experienced classmates and I left each session with a new sense of calm and accomplishment.
On this particular weekend, my fellow guests just happened to be working mothers enjoying a rare respite from juggling responsibilities.
This made the culinary efforts of Suzy and Philip, who are both accomplished cooks, even more enjoyable.
Devouring sumptuous three-course meals with a glass of wine or two – without clearing away a single plate – was a tonic.
Highlights included the almond cake with honey and yoghurt ice-cream at dinner, and the pears poached with
a cinnamon stick and star anise at brunch, which had us begging for recipes.
